"War is war" cried Snowball

Last week there was a conflict between Humans and Animals. Something you’ve never heard of before, “The Battle of Cowshed”. Animals found their way to victory, leaving humans in desperation. Snowball and Boxer fought with every atom of strength they had and were willing to do whatever they needed to win this battle. For this article, we also have the collaboration of Albert Rothenfort. He fought for Arihuanam´s civil rights and we want to know his point of view.

Mr. Rothenfort, we are pleased to have you here. What do you think about the attitude the animals are having against human race?

First of all, thank you very much for inviting me over. I sincerely think that what these animals are doing is absolutely great! They are fighting for what they want, they are making clear that they are not slaves and they want us, humans, to realize that they also want to have a good life.

So, you are saying that revolution is good?

When we need something and they don’t give it to us, we need to fight for it, just like I did. We need to talk, make other listen. If they don’t want to listen, why should we stay quite?

Would you give these animals any advice? Give advice to the leader?

I would tell them to keep on going. They need rights, they need to be heard, and they need what they want. There is no other way of getting it.

Boxer, the horse, was one of the heroes of the night. Tell us boxer…
How do you feel about killing a human?

Well, first of all I want to clear something up. I didn’t want to hurt him. I forgot I was using those silver shoes and everything went wrong. I sincerely apologize to his family. I don’t feel good about it, but as Snowball says “War is War” right?

You would do anything for you friends?

Everything I can. I mean, they have always been there for me and somehow I need to pay them back. I feel happy we won. I’m pretty sure that if we won once, we can do it again. And I won’t stop until I know we are the war winners.

Snowball has always been there with the animals. He tries to keep the peace between everyone in the farm. He controls everything that goes on in union with the pigs.
Snowball… Do you think that you had a good performance in the “Battle of Cowshed”?

Well I think we can do better. We can always do better. Next time we will, and it will be amazing. Humans will not want to come back here… EVER AGAIN!

That is great, any other comments?

No thanks. I don’t really enjoy making interviews. If you’ll excuse me… I have something important to do in the farm.

That’s all we have for now. No more information. We are pretty sure, the animals will win this war. They want it, the can.

Animal Farm, Rhetorical Devices

Old Major uses many rhetorical devices in his speech, for example Rhetorical Questions, Tricolon and Contrast. I am going to analyze each one of them and describe why he used it, what impact does it has on the other animals and what impact it has one me as a reader.

Old Major uses Rhetorical Questions to make the other animals think about the situation they are in. He wants them to realize that they live in bad conditions and by using this rhetorical device they start thinking more about themselves. They start realizing that all the effort they put into their work is not well rewarded. They give everything they can, but they do not receive what they deserve. This device also makes me think about their situation and how sometimes we treat animals the wrong way. “You cows […] how many thousands of gallons of milk have you given during this last year? And what has happened to that milk which should have been breeding up sturdy calves?” (p. 4, 5)

He also uses Tricolon. He wants to make sure he has enough points to prove that he is right. He also wants the other animals to believe him, so that is why he needs to give them as many examples as he can. The other animals start thinking about their situation and they have various reasons to say that Old Major is right. They are starting to believe that a revolution against humans is needed. It also makes me think that they have many reasons to start a rebellion. “The soil of England is fertile, its climate is good, it is capable of affording food in abundance to an enormously greater number of animals that now inhabit it” (p. 4)

As other rhetorical device he uses Contrast. He wants to make sure they understand that human’s life is much better than the life they are living. Old major wants to contrast their comfort with the human comfort. The animals realize that their situation is really bad and that humans are taking advantage of them. They realize they are not living the way they are supposed to. Actually I think it is not fair because we don’t treat them good. Sometimes we abuse their work. “All men are enemies. All animals are comrades” (p. 6)

In conclusion, we can see that Old Major uses rhetorical questions, tricolon and contrast so that he can make his point clear. By using these rhetorical devices, he is able to make the animals think about their situation and realize they are not living the life they are supposed to.

Animal Farm, and introduction

My favorite character is Old Major. He is the one that start the whole revolution with a speech. He is respected by others because he is the oldest animal living in the farm. He is presented as leader. Everyone wants to hear what he has to say, when he has to say it. He also has a very strong impact in the other animal’s life. He is the most respected animal in the farm, which means everything he says has to be done.

He is my favorite character because he knows how to influence others. He knows what is going to make animals life in a better place. He knows what is good and what is not. He is well experienced and he is a great leader. I think of myself as a leader and that is why I can relate to him. I want to do things right and he also wants to do things right even though he is about to die.
